Episode 2 - Loneliness, vulnerability, overload
In order to rise up the ranks, do you have to armor yourself against feelings? Is the role model to follow the tough manager who pushes his way through?
Leadership has to do with being exposed. Feelings associated with exposure are often fear of loss of control and fear of rejection. In this episode we discuss strategies for dealing with fear and vulnerability. Should or can we allow emotional closeness, what are the consequences? Leaders who are empathetic and approachable expose themselves to the risk of being manipulated and disappointed. As a counter-strategy, we often put on an armor to avoid being disappointed or hurt. Emotional distance ultimately leads to loneliness and often to overwork. I show methods for self-management, what does it take to integrate both distance and closeness and to become VISIBLE as a human being?
As a source of inspiration for this episode I draw on works by Michael Meade and Brené Brown. Michael Meade is an American author, mythologist and storyteller who delves deeply into 'being human' in his works. Brené Brown is a professor at the University of Houston and one of the most renowned researchers on the topic of vulnerability.
